Qantas will take delivery of three brand new 787s from June this year and they are yet to say where these planes will be deployed.
What is clear is Qantas has significant options and CEO Alan Joyce has been out spruiking some of them recently.
The primary contenders appear to be Perth direct to Paris and Brisbane direct to Chicago.
The deciding factor appears to be the resolution of the long-running Qantas/Perth Airport dispute that has already seen potential Qantas service from Perth to Jakarta and Johannesburg suspended.
Perth to Paris should win out if this dispute can be resolved.
If not then Australia will enjoy the first direct flight to Windy City.
Whatever the end result passengers will enjoy the excellent Qantas Business Suite at the pointy end.
The ability for more and more destinations to be linked via direct flights from Australia is cause for celebration and this trend will accelerate when “Project Sunrise” – where Qantas will use a fleet of Airbus A350-1000s to link Sydney and Melbourne direct to New York, London and other significant cities – begins service in 2025.
