AIr India is not the first name in luxury aircraft travel but new owner Tata Group is trying to change that.

Tata took over Air India in 2022 and has announced plans to turn the moribund airline into a truly luxury alternative to the Gulf carriers that all operate heavy schedules to India.

To show how serious they are, the airline has announced two huge aircraft orders to refresh its fleet.

First was its commitment to order 250 Airbus aircraft which includes 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo single-aisle aircraft as well as 34 A350-1000 and 6 A350-900 wide-body jets.

Shortly afterwards they announced the acquisition of 290 Boeing aircraft including 190 737 MAX, 20 787 Dreamliner and 10 777X aeroplanes.

The agreement between Boeing and Air India includes options for 50 additional 737 MAXs and 20 787-9s.

The Indian aviation market is booming and will continue to grow rapidly as the country overtakes China as the home of the world’s largest population.

This is an order of staggering magnitude and it will be interesting to follow the progress in recreating the Air India brand.
